Abstract

Objective:To study the relationship between the level of serum insulin-like growth factor-1(IGF-1) and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) in the elderly patients with essential hypertension.Methods:60 elderly patients suffering from essential hypertension and 55 healthy elderly people were selected. Serum IGF-1 levels were measured by immunoradiometry and carotid IMT was determined by high resolution ultrasound. Results:Among 60 hypertensive cases, with blood pressure became higher, carotid IMT was significantly thicker.56 cases were found with carotid artery plaque. The serum of IGF-1 in the elderly patients with essential hypertension 〔(207.70±79.21)ng/ml〕 was significantly higher than that in the normal controls 〔(132.53±35.62)ng/ml〕(P0.001).Conclusion:The results showed strong relationship between the serum IGF-1 levels and carotid IMT. Ultrasonography can be regarded as a window which can observe atherosclerosis of whole body.
