Clinical observation of Ahmed glaucoma valve implantation in the treatment of refractory glaucoma

Objective To observe the efficacy and complication of Ahmed glaucoma valve implantation in the treatment of refractory glaucoma.Methods Thirty-two cases (32 eyes) diagnosed as refractory glaucoma were followed up after Ahmed glaucoma valve implantation.Intraocular pressure (IOP),visual acuity and complication were observed.Results The total success rate was 87.50%,including 85.71% for neovascular glaucoma and 90.91% for others.Pre-operative IOP were (45.3±11.3)mmHg (1 kPa=7.5 mmHg),IOP at the final follow-up was (16.57±5.31)mmHg,there was statistical difference(t=-13.017,P0.05).Visual acuity maintained in 16 cases,improved in 14 cases and decreased in 2 cases.The postoperative complications included shallow of anterior chamber in 7 cases,hyphema in 4 cases,choroids detachment in 3 cases and bleb encapsulation in 2 cases.Conclusion Ahmed glaucoma valve implantation for refractory glaucoma is effective with few complications.
