Abstract

[Objective]To explore the diagnosis and treatment of renal cell carcinoma(RCC)with inferior vena cava tumor thrombus(IVC).[Methods]The information of 7 cases of renal cell carcinoma with inferior vena cava tumor thrombus were collected and analyzed, while discussed by combination of literatures.[Results]Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)accurately delineated the extent of the thrombus in all 7 cases, including 6 cases of 2nd type and 1case 1st type. All patients underwent surgical removal of tumor thrombus and confirmed by pathology. One died of pulmonary metastasis at the time of 20 months after surgery. 6 patients were followed up for 5 months to 40 months, survived without carcinoma.[Conclusion]Magnetic resonance imaging is the best way to diagnose and delineate the extent of inferior vena cava thrombosis of renal cell carcinoma. Radical nephrectomy is the key point for achieving long-term survivals of patients with renal cell carcinoma. The operation depends on the extent of renal cell carcinoma invading the inferior vena cava and whether the vena cava wall is invaded.
