Abstract

Based on experimental and theoretical results of fracture mechanics and combined seismic informations, this paper presented a new model for the rupture of earthquake fault, the curved-surface model of the spreading of eatthquake fault. The path of curved surface (line) along which an earthquake fault spreads was computed numerically for the two dimensional case. According to the characteristics of this kind of earthquake, the direction of principal compressive tectonic stress in the region in which the earthquake occurs can be determined from the direction of the general rupture of this earthquake. An application was made for the Tangshan earthquake.In computation, an improvement was made for the current finite element method; the space of storage was decreased and the computing speed was increased.
