The Cultural and Philosophical Bases of Liang Shuming's “Countryside Construction Theory”

The cultural and philosophical basis of Liang Shuming's theory on coun tryside construction has two aspects. One is related to his idea about the superiority of Chinese culture and the other is to his idea about the peculiarity of Chinese culture. With these aspects in mind, Liang flatly rejected the view of solving Chinese problems through stormy revolution. He believed that what China needed urgently was to rebuild the social structure. Liangs theory was, on the whole, not a correct one, and his efforts in this field were by no means rewarding. Nevertheless, there is something plausible at the core. This and his good will to save the world physically and spiritually may give some inspiration to the contemporary people and their society.
