Abstract
The secondary suspended river is a serious hidden trouble of flood control in the lower Yellow River. The lower Yellow River can be an alive river only changing the situation of high channel with low floodplain and removing the secondary suspended river. It can utilize the force of the nature and eliminate the serious present situation of the secondary suspended river in a quickly and better way only by demolishing production dykes. Demolishing production dykes should firstly build safe floodplain. Under such presupposition, the paper suggests to change the operational mode of the Xiaolangdi Reservoir, i.e. to impound major floods and not dominant small floods; to release muddy water and not clear water; to store less water in flood season, retain coarse sediment and drain off the find and; to utilize flooding for scouring the channel and use the floodplain for depositing the majority of coming sediment.
