Primary Repair on Great Defect of the Scalp and Skull Bone by Pedicle Island Flap Based on Superficial Temporal Artery

Abstract

Objective To study the clinical application of pedicle island flap based on superficial temporal artery in repairing of great defect of the scalp and skull bone. Methods Full forehead flap consists of superficial temporal artery and posteriol auricular artery. Tempo-occipital flap consists of superficial temporal artery and occipital artery. The defect was resected and repaired by above flaps. The donor area was covered by split thickness skin flap. Results All 7 flaps survived well and their texture was excellent. After 3-12 months follow up the wound showed primary healing. Conclusion Use of pedicle island flap based on superficial temporal artery is reasonable, reliable and simple mothod. It can repair great defect of the scalp and skull bone in one stage.
