Abstract

Activated carbon prepared from grapefruit-peel,an agricultural solid waste by-product,is used for phosphate adsorption from aqueous solution.Parameters such as initial concentration, adsorbent dose,pH and temperature on phosphate adsorption are studied by batch technique. The adsorption of phosphate caused by different pH values(2,6 and 10) is small.Adsorption could be increased by enhancing the initial phosphate concentration. The temperature at 40 ℃ is the maximum adsorption(0.69 mg / g) of phosphate from aqueous solutions. The adsorption temperature from 20 ℃ to 50 ℃ makes no difference in adsorption performance(0.60-0.69 mg / g).Kinetic studies reveal that the adsorption process follows the pseudo-second order kinetic model.Adsorption follows the Freundlich isotherm model. The apparent activation energy is determined to be 42.03 kJ / mol.Adsorption of phosphate on activated carbon is a chemical adsorption process.
