Abstract
Epoxy resin was flame retarded with the halogen-free phosphorous flame retardant bisphenol A-bis(5,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxaphosphorinanyl-2-oxy phosphate ester). When the content of the fire retardant is about 20%,the flame retarded epoxy resin (EP) possesses a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of about 29.0% and a UL94 V-0 grade. The heat release rate(HRR),total heat release(THR),mass loss rate(MLR) and the generation of smoke and toxic gases of the flame retarded EP were measured. Compared with pure EP,HRR,THR,MLR and SEA of the flame retarded EP is decreased by a factor of 70.9%,49.6%,90.8% and 59.4%,respectively. In addition, scanning electron microscope(SEM) observation reveals that puffy coking charred layers are formed by lots of closed bubbles in EP specimen filled with FR after burning.
