Abstract

Objective To evaluate the proliferation inhibitory effect of elemene on glioma cell and primary astrocyte. Methods The effects of elemene on cell proliferation were studied in vitro by using MTT assay;Astrocyte-enriched culture from postnatal rat cerebral cortex tissue was prepared. The cytocidal effects of elemene in the presence of various concentrations were measured.Through assessing the histological effect, the effect of elemene on astrocyte and the glioma cell was compared. Results Elemene exhibited a marked antiproliferative effect on rat glioma cell C6.The IC 50 was about 19.73-39.75 mg/L;Also the results showed 80-100 mg/L elemene did not affect the astrocyte. In glioma cells, addition of 30-40 mg/L elemene resulted in a marked growth suppression. Conclusion The antitumor effect of elemene is specific.
