Surgical treatment of cardiac myxoma

Abstract

Objective To summarize the experience of surgical treatment of cardiac myxoma and explore the clinical characteristics and surgical methods.Methods Between 1992 and 2002,15 patients(6 males,9 females),aged 21 to 63 years(average age was 45.08±12.40),were operated on for cardiac myxoma under median hypothermic anaesthesia with cardiopulmonary bypass.The most common location of the myxoma was the left atrium(14 cases).Results No operative or postoperative mortality and morbility was found.The mean postoperative follow up period was 4.5 years.No recurrunce had been seen.Conclusion Myxoma of left atrium is the most commom primary benign intracardiac tumor and surgical treatment is effective and feasible.
