Abstract
Objective To investigate an effective method for treatment of huge and recurrent pterygium. Methods Excision of pterygium associated with transplantation of bulbal conjunctiva or limbal-conjunctival autograft were performed in 27 patients (27 eyes) with huge and recurrent pterygium.The patients were divided into two groups. There were 8 cases in group I(excision of pterygium associated with transplantation of bulbal conjunctiva), 19 cases in group II(excision of pterygium associated with transplantation of limbal-conjunctival autograft). All the patients were treated under surgery microscope. Results The mean follow up time was 9.4 months after surgeries. Pterygium occurred again postoperatively in one eye with transplantation of bulbal conjunctiva. No recurrent pterygium was found in eyes with transplantation of limbal autograft. Conclusions Transplantation of limbal autograft and bulbal conjunctiva appears to be a promising treatment for pterygium.
