Abstract

Compressor stability in the form of surge and stall is a major concern for designers of compressor. Under many conditions, unstable flow conditions are initiated in the endwall flow region of a compressor. If aerodynamic stall in the endwall region can be delayed, the stability of the compressor may be improved. Over the last 30 years, various forms of casing treatment have been employed for improving the endwall flow and hence enhancing the compressor stability. This paper reviews the experimental investigations, theoretical analyses and numerical investigations on the casing treatment of the axial-flow compressor. The fundamental mechanisms of casing treatments and their relative effects on the compressor performance and stability are summarized. Some recommendations are made for future researches.
