Abstract

Wang Tao was the first historian who went out to see the world. He not only learned ancient Chinese classics from childhood but also understood the Western learning. He was not only influenced by Chinese traditional culture but also clearly aware of the irresistible tendency of the social change. In studying the formation of Wang Tao's historical view of change, one should investigate the influence of modern Western learning and the effect of Chinese culture. One should take into account the political society of deep-rooted weakness and economic environment of long-standing poverty, and the potential spur of Chinese traditional culture. These two aspects seem to be contradictory and conflicting, but in reality there exists a bridge that can link them up.
