Endoscopic Nasal Surgery for Fungal Maxillary Sinusitis by Dual Approaches

Objective Objective To evaluate the effect of endoscopic nasal surgery with dual approaches on noninvasive fungal maxillary sinusitis.Methods Forty-three patients with noninvasive fungal maxillary sinusitis were treated with endoscopic maxillary sinus surgery combined with windowing of inferior nasal meatus.The postoperative treatment was the same as the treatment of common chronic rhinosinusitis.No systemic or topical treatments with antifungal drugs were performed after operation.Result The clinical symptoms disappeared in all patients 6 months after operation.NO secretions were found in middle nasal meatus and nasal cavity.The sinus mucous membrane was normal and ostial drainage was adequate.In addition,there was no abnormal discharge or fungal mass in sinus cavity.Neither complication nor recurrence occurred during the 1-5 year period of follow-up.Conclusion Endoscopic maxillary sinus surgery combined with windowing of inferior nasal meatus is an effective treatment for noninvasive fungal maxillary sinusitis.The regular irrigation and follow-up after operation are important for avoiding recurrence.Antifungal drugs are not necessary for noninvasive fungal maxillary sinusitis.
