Abstract

A new catalytic photometric method for the determination of trace amount of nitrite was described. It was based on the fact that the oxidation of bromocresol green by potassium bromate was catalyzed by nitrite in phosphoric acid medium. The calibration curve showed linearity in the range from 0.02-0.25 mg/L and the limit of detection was 1.1×10~(-5). The method is convenient, sensitive and selective. It has been applied to the determination of trace amounts of nitrite in vegetables with satisfactory results.
