Abstract

Background and aims Reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by circulating monocytes is related to atherosclerosis. Inducible heme oxygenase (HO)-1 is a component of cellular mechanisms against oxidative stress. This research was conducted to investigate whether HO-1 gene expression in circulating monocytes is related to early-stage carotid atherosclerosis in Type 2 diabetic patients. Methods We examined 38 inpatients with Type 2 diabetes and 20 healthy controls. Monocyte HO-1 gene expressions were detected using reverse transcriptase- polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and -actin gene was used as internal control for RNA normalization. The carotid intima-media thicknesses (IMT) were measured by B-mode ultrasounography.
