Abstract

Subject is an important term of modern syntactic research in western grammar theory.Essentially, subject is a form,i.e.,it is a concept in sentence analysis at the syntactic level. However, when defining subject,we tend to mention some other concepts, such as the object of statement, the doer of the movement, and the known information, etc.Yet they are not concepts at the syntactic level,so defining subject with these concepts may result in the chaos in the knowledge of the nature of subject. From the angle of the relationship between syntax and semantics, the paper mainly discusses the relationship and differences between subject and these concepts, pointing out that despite overlapping with theme, illocutionary as a unit of form, there is no direct corresponding relationship but natural overlapping.Lastly, the paper reaffirms the importance of defining subject as a form of unit.
