Abstract
Objective To explore the protection of the parotid function after intensity-modulation radiation therapy(IMRT) in nasophargeal cancer. Methods From June 2005 to February 2008,25 patients of nasophargeal cancer underwent IMRT and conventional radiotherapy were observed. The level of mouth dryness and the parotid function were compared before treatment, after treatment and 3 month after treatment. Results According to the xerostomia symptom, there were 9 cases of Ⅱ grade and 2 cases of Ⅲ grade in the group of IMRT,3 cases of Ⅱ grade and 11 cases of Ⅲ grade in the group of conventional radiotherapy. The result has significant difference(P0.05).After 3 month followed up,The xerostomia recovered or abatement in IMRT group however not in another group. There was significant difference in EI after radiotherapy(P0.05) but no significance in every time(P0.05).Conclusion IMRT can protecet the parotid function evidently and reduce the xerostomia. It can improve life quality.
