The Setup of Magistrate at County Level in the Qin Dynasty Found in the Bamboo and Wooden Slips in Liye

Abstract

From the bamboo and wooden slips in Liye,one can find that the director of the various branches at or under the magistrate level can all be addressed as shou,signifying the meaning of prefect.In the meantime,ling and sefu were coexisting magistrate titles.As far as the assistant are concerned,auxiliary officials occurred quite frequently in the bamboo and wooden slips in Liye of the Qin Dynasty and it seems that we cannot explain by temporary assistant officials.The official just below county magistrate had the power of arranging without seeking the agreement from the assistant of county magistrate.In addition,the setup of little under the magistrate level was rather complex,and the distinction of authority was not clear,which reflects the indistinction of the authorities assigned to the under the magistrate level as well as the insufficiently low levels of county administration division.
