Clinical study of Toric intraocular lens implantation for correcting corneal astigmatism

Abstract

Objective To evaluate efficacy,predictability and rotational stability of AcrySof toric intraocular lens for correcting corneal astigmatism in cataract patients.Methods 26 age-related cataract patients(31 eyes) with corneal astigmatism more than 1.0 D were enrolled between July 2008 and August 2010.All eyes was implanted with Acrysof Toric IOL after phacoemulsification by the same surgeon.A 6-month follow-up is planned.The uncorrected distance visual acuity(UCDVA),preoperative corneal astigmatism,anticipated residual astigmatism,postoperative residual astigmatism,Toric IOL axis rotational stability were measured.Results At 6 months postoperatively,the UCDVA was 0.5 or better in 28 eyes(90.3%),and was 0.8 or better in 25 eyes(80.6%).The mean preoperative corneal astigmatism was(-2.03±0.43)D,The mean residual astigmatism at 6 months postoperatively was(-0.52±0.22)D,indicating a significant decrease refractive cylinder after surgery(P0.05).The mean toric IOL rotation was respectively(4.64±1.98) degrees,(4.87±1.94) degrees,(5.64±1.89)degrees at 1 week,1 month,6 months postoperatively,there were no significant differences among the different months(P0.05),only one eye occurred more than 10 degrees of axis rotation at 6 months postoperatively.Conclusion Toric IOLs can provide good predictability and rotational stability,Implantation of toric IOLs for correcting corneal astigmatism in cataract patients is effective and safe.
