Abstract
garden images from John Steinbeck's short stories —The Chrysanthemums and The White Quail in Long Valley enhance the works' artistic charm and bring readers the sense of beauty,which,however,didn't enjoy enough attention in the past study.This paper attempts to explore the artistic functions of the garden images from the four aspects: providing narrative scenes,characterizing characters,creating artistic concept and deepening themes in the hope that the readers can enjoy the inherent artistic charm in the works.
