Effect of BIS on the incidence of oculocardiac reflex during propofol-remifentanil anaesthesia in paediatric strabismus surgery

Objective To evaluate the effect of bispectral index(BIS) on the incidence of oculocardiac reflex(OCR) during propofol-remifentanil anaesthesia in paediatric strabismus surgery.Methods Sixty-three patients(2-12 years older) undergoing strabismus surgery were randomly allocated to three groups with 21 cases each.Anesthesia was maintained with infusion of remifentanil 12 μg·kg-1·h-1 and proporol 3-7 mg·kg-1·h-1.The target BIS values of 60(group P1),50(group P2) and 40(group P3) were kept by regulating the infusion rate of propofol.The incidence of OCR and heart rate during operation were recorded.Results The incidences of OCR in groups of P1,P2 and P3 were 66.7%,33.3% and 9.5%,respectively(P0.01).Conclusion The incidence of OCR can be reduced when BIS is kept in 40-50 in children undergoing strabismus surgery under propofol-remifentanil anesthesia.
