Abstract
The pump sump,which connects forebay and intake of pump station,supplies good flow condition for the intake of the pump.The flow inside pump sump is very complex and dominated by three dimensional viscous effects.In order to recognize the characteristic of pump sump,the control volume method is used to simulation the flow filed.The RNG k-e turbulent model and SIMPLEC algorithm are applied.Flow fields inside pump sump are analyzed in details.Using CFD,the flow pattern in the sump is revealed.The flow patterns in the sump are classified as three ones: Hortical,bellmouth pumping and pipe flowing.The flow characteristics of them are different.The surfacevortices and sub-vortices may exist above bellmouth,at backwall near water surface,near two rectangles of sump and near bottom of two side-walls.It is necessary to add some fitting in the sump to eliminate the votices.
