Research on the Desert and Desertification in China

Based on the review of evaluation standard,indicator system,and research content of the desertification in China,the desertification research actuality in our countries was summarized and the developmenttrend of the desertification was studied for overview in past decades.The developmenttrend of the desertification could be represented in three aspects. Firstly,the combination of desertificationresearch with restoration ecology and the adoption of the theory of restoration ecology in the desertification research promoted the demonstration of combating the desertification base on ecosystem diversity,stability,energy flux,and material recycle.Secondly,landscape ecology theory and method by which the changing law of landscape structure in desertifiedareas had been indicated had been used to investigate the desertification process in regional scale.The dynamic mechanism of the occurrenceand development of desertification had been studied and supplemented according to landscape scale in order to provide new scientific proofs and methods for land use and management in the desertified areas.Thirdly,the close combination of hydrology and desertification research had became a very important trend for the desertification research.In this new field,lots of researchers focused on ecological water requirements in individual,population and community scales.Therefore,the restoration and combating desertification have been paid more and more attention by the public.It woulddefinitelybecome one of the principal parts of the global environmental problemsresearch.
