Abstract

Conventional bioremoval of nitrogen involves two processes: aerobic nitrification, and anaerobic denitrification. In view of the disadvantages existing with the conventional processes for bioremoval of nitrogen, the advantages of aerobic denitrification technology are brought forward, the mechanism thereof is preliminarily discussed, and a theoretical analysis is made from different angles. Meanwhile, the development of the study of aerobic denitrification in and outside China is elaborated, the prospect of the application of aerobic denitrification is made, and it is proposed that the emphasis of the future study of aerobic denitrification should be put on the screening and domestication of the aerobic denitrifying bacteria, and further understanding of their denitrification characteristics should be obtained, so as to be able to give effective technological supports to the process of bioremoval of nitrogen by aerobic denitrification.
