Abstract
Objective:To assess the effects of resveratrol on chronic liver fibrosis induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl_4) in rats.Methods:A chronic liver fibrosis model was induced by subcutaneously injecting 50% CCl_4 (1 mL·kg -1) twice a week for 10 weeks to Wistar rats. Liver fibrogenic rats were then administered ig with resveratrol at the doses of 25, 50 or 100 mg·kg -1 for 6 weeks. Rat bloods were drawn to measure levels of serum alamine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total protein (TP), albumin (ALB), liver hydroxyproline (Hyp) and malondialdehyde (MDA). At the end of the treatment, the rats were euthanized to conduct the liver histopathological examination and semi-quantification of liver fibrogensis by using image analysis. Results:Rats fed with 50 and 100 mg·kg -1 of resveratrol had significant reductions in levels of the serum ALT, and liver Hyp and MDA and relieving liver fibrogensis, compared with the control rats. Conclusion:Resveratrol might be effective in the treatment of liver fibrosis.
