Abstract

The reason why high earth embankment is very easy to sink is that the degree of compaction is not adequate.Practice proves that stability and strength of the embankment are influenced by the degree of compaction greatly. If the compaction degree is insufficient, the embankment will be deformed or destroyed by weathering and vehicle repeatedly loading. This is because that undercompacted embankment has lower resistance to storm or water erosion. At the same time, for the embankment with high degree of compaction the strength is obviously higher, the water penetration lower, deformation reduced and the stability improved apparently .In this way, the large-scale damage can be avoided. The degree of compaction relates to the earth properties, moisture content, the function and capacity of compactor, and the procedures of compaction. The optimum moisture content should be controlled, the appropriate compactors and compaction speed should be selected, and the best compaction thickness and the number of compactions should be determined according to the criteria of compaction and the earth properties in order to get the adequate compaction degree and prevent unnecessary sedimentation of high earth embankment.
