Abstract

The mammalian carboxylesterases (EC 3.1.1.1) comprise a multigene family, the gene products are localized in the endoplasmic reticulum of many tissues. Carboxylesterases efficiently catalyze the hydrolysis of ester- and amide-containing chemicals, and are classified into the serine hydrolase super family. They are involved in detoxification or metabolic activation of various drugs, environmental toxicants, and carcinogens, and also play an important physiological role in lipid metabolism. This review emphasizes in biochemical characteristics, mechanisms and the molecular biology of carboxylesterases.
