A Comparative Analysis of Mydriasis Refraction between Cyclopentolate Hydrochloride and Atropine for Children's Hyperopia

Abstract

Objective To compare the cycloplegic effect of 1%cyclopentolate hydrochloride and 1%atropine sulphate in children with hyperopia. Methods Eighty-nine children with hyperopia (178 eyes) aged from 3 to 12 were subjected to mydriatic refratometry by 1% cyclopentolate hydrochloride followed with 1%atropine sulphate eye used gel. The refractive results,pupil size,residual accommodation and systemic side reactions were measured and compared. Results Among the 86 eyes with simple hyperopia,71 presented identical optometric results or less than 0.50 D (diopter) after instillation of the two agents,with 82.6% in agreement with the degree of spherical lens. Among the 92 eyes with the compound hyperopia,74 presented identical optometric results or less than 0.50 D of spherical lens,with 80.4%,83.7% and 83.7% in agreement with the degree of spherical lens,cylinder lens and axia of astigmatism,respectively.The differences in coincidence with the degree of spherical lens,cylinder lens and axia of astigmatism were statistically insignificant in three different age-range groups(P0.05). The effect on pupil size and residual accommodation after application of cyclopentolate hydrochloride and atropine sulphate showed no significant difference in three age-range groups(P0.05). Incidence rate of systemic side effects after the instillation of 1%cyclopentolate hydrochloride(3.4%) lower than that of 1%atropine sulphate(13.5%). Conclusion The cyclopentolate cycloplegia is powerful,quick and safe cycloplegic,which could be replaced for atropine in mydriasis refraction for children with hyperopia.
