Abstract

Objective To investigate the carrier rate of thalassemia gene in children with decreased mean corpuscular volume(MCV).Methods Among children detecting for blood cell analyse owing to upper respiratory tract infection or diarrhea or other common disease in pe-diatrics,105 children whose MCV lower than 79 fL were found.Gene detection were performed in these children for detecting 3 kinds of α thalassemia deletion mutation,5 kinds of α thalassemia non-deletion mutation and 17 kinds of β thalassemia gene that was common in China. Results Ninety-two cases were found thalassemia, among them,21 cases of silent minor α-thalassemia,46 cases of standard minor α-thalassemia,2 cases of intermedia thalassemia α,18 cases of β thalassemia, and 5 cases of α thalassemia/β thalassemia. Conclusion Carrier rate of thalassemia gene in children with lower MCV is very high.
