Abstract
Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of particle repositioning maneuver(PRM) for posterior semicircular canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo(BPPV). Methods 36 patients with posterior semicircular canal BPPV were treated with PRM from January to December in 2003. Results After a single treatment session of PRM, the symptoms disappeared completely in 28 of 36 patients(77 8%), in which the symptoms disappeared in 16 of 18 patients with the disease course in one week. The symptoms also disappeared in 4 patients after twice and 2 patients after triple PRM sessions. The total effective rate was 94 4%. The symptoms remitted in 2 ineffective patients after Semont liberatory maneuver. 3 patients(8 8%) recurred during follow up and it was also effective for another PRM therapy. Conclusions The PRM therapy is safe and effective for posterior semicircular canal BPPV and should be treated for all patients as the diagnosis is defined.
