Surgical treatment of diplopia with thyroid associated ophthalmopathy.

Objective To investigate the unique characteristics and effect of surgical treatment of strabismus derived in patients from thyroid associated ophthalmopathy(TAO).Methods 14 cases(16 eyes) derived from TAO were treated with extraocular muscle surgery,included recession of inferior rectus muscle(7 muscles),medial rectus muscle (3 muscles),superior rectus muscle(3 muscles),and lateral rectus muscle(2 muscles),resection of superior rectus muscle(1 muscle).Results The postoperative follow_up was 3_9 months(averaged(5.6 months).)There were no diplopia after operation when patients looked down and horizontally.Eye position was normal.Conclusion Extraocular muscle surgery is an effective method for diplopia and restricted ocular movements derived from TAO,and obtain satisfactory results.
