Fujiwara seika and Confucianism at Edo Period in Japan

Abstract

The development of Confucianism reached its heyday at the Edo period in Japan when various Confucian factions emerged in succession and appeared to be booming in prosperity.Highly praised by the Tokugawa shogun,Zhu Xi's theory,recommended as official ideology,played a significant part in the further development of Confucianism,leading to the localization of Confucianism in Japan,which had an enormous impact on the country.For one thing,it was because Zhu Xi's emphasis on the sub-ideology of three cardinal guides and five constant virtues and the propositions of royalty,filial obedience,benevolence and justice was in line with the feudal shogun's ideology to consolidate his rule,and the cause of the Buddhist weakness,for another,it is because of the fact that Fujiwara seika and his followers have infused new blood to the development of Confucianism in Japan.
