ZHAO Shu-li and Modern Human Nature

ZHAO Shu-li was a writer in liberated areas,but he was not a commonly-considered popolar writer,and his writings are not folk literature.Works written by him possess May-4th spirit;they are rich fruits borne by May-4th Spirit.Based on the issue of reformation of modern human nature,which is most characteristic of May-4th quality,this paper,through analysing different representative focal points of problem novels during different periods since May-4th movement,holds that ZHAO Shu-li also devoted himself to healthy construction of human nature.He represents in his books history of changes of peasants' human nature and importance of individualism in peasants' actual life.When ZHAO Shu-li writes peasants' conscions awakening,he lays particular emphasis on point that external cause makes characters change in their heart of hearts.In this way he creates a great number of rural characters true of life.This is ZHAO's originality.
