Abstract

Supporters of arbitrariness always argue that arbitrariness and iconicity do not work on the same level, and arbitrariness is absolute on the level of individual character. This paper intends to explain that, whether on the level of individual character or on its sound dividing and concept defining, absolute arbitrariness is untenable. Hence it would be better to adopt the term of relative arbitrariness in these fields.
