Surgical treatment of aural atresia/stenosis in 15 cases

Objective To investigate suitable surgical treatment for aural atresia or stenosis.Method 15 cases of aural atresia or stenosis who received canal-plasty were reviewed.Postoperative follow-up ranged from one-half to two years.Result In 14 ears,the external auditory canal was enlarged.However,the atresia occured again in the other 1 ear.Conclusion Different surgical procedures can be applied in aural atresia or stenosis depending on the factors,such as congenital or acquired,and with or without inflammation of tympanic-mastoid area.The keys of the operation are canal-plasty and obtainment of a wide external auditory opening.The defect area must be covered by a skin graft.
