Linkage between the interannual variation patterns of seasonal sea surface temperature(SST) in Indian ocean-Pacific and their relationship with the summer rainfall over China are investigated,using the NECP reanalysis data,Reynolds SST and the station rainfalls in China from 1958 to 1998.There exist significant correlation between the dominant mode of SST anomalies in winter(ENSO mode) based on EOF analysis and the dominant mode of SST in following springs,the anomalous modes of SST in Asian-Australian monsoon area in following summers and autumns.It means that when the El Nino(La Nina)-like anomalous pattern of SST occurs in winter in Indian ocean-Pacific,followed by the El Nino(La Nina)-like anomalous pattern of SST in the coming spring,then the positive(negative) anomalous mode of SST appears in the tropical ocean within the Asian-Australian monsoon area in the summer and autumn to come.The anomalous mode of SST in the tropical Asian-Australian monsoon area has significant positive correlation with the summer rainfall over the middle reach of the Yangtze River and the vicinity south to it.The anomalous SST mode in winter in the north Pacific,which is closely related with the anomalous East Asian winter monsoon,may make an impact on the East Asian summer monsoon through its close connection with the summer anomalous mode of SST in the tropical Asian-Australian monsoon area.
