Abstract

Aim: To investigate the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9 in astrocytomas and its correlation with neoplastic angiogenesis. Methods:The expression of MMP-9 and the change of microvessel density (MVD) were detected in 40 cases of astrocytomas by immunohistochemical staining. Results: MVD and expression of MMP-9 in astrocytoma at Ⅰ~Ⅱ grade was 34.73±12.56 and 48.13±9.74,and in Ⅲ~Ⅳ grade was 63.96±18.29 and 65.34±7.76. MVD and expression of MMP-9 in astrocytoma at Ⅰ~Ⅱ grade was significantly lower than those in Ⅲ~Ⅳ grade astrocytoma( P0.01). There was correlation between MVD and expression of MMP-9 in human astrocytomas. Conclusion: MVD and expression of MMP-9 are positively correlated with the grade of astrocytoma. MMP-9 plays an important role in the angiogenesis of astrocytoma.
