Abstract

Xue Kan was a famous Confucian scholar and official during the Ming Dynasty in Chaoshan area.He treated his parents with most filial piety, his King with most royalty, his teachers with most respect, his study with most concentration, and he treated people most sincerely.Because he submitted a memorial to the throne hoping that the King could check the old standard, pick and elect noble and wise officials to help with government affairs, which actually offended the King.He was sent to jail and later was subjected to persecution. But it was always clear that he kept his noble and just personality as an official.Being a student of Wang Yangming,he did scholarly research and worked on the study of diposition and achieved much.So he was considered one of the most outstanding formal students of Wang Yangming, and a master of authority to spread Wang Yangming' philosophy. When Xue Kan settled in his hometown, all he thought was how to benefit his hometown and his folk people there. He built dams and dikes, created brooks, built roads and bridges, making a lot of practical contributions to his hometown. Thus he practiced his ideological concept of being of practical use in his real life.
