Abstract

Objective To evaluate the effect of bone graft and guided tissue regeneration (GTR) used in combination as regenerative treatment for grade Ⅱ molar furcation defects in humans. Methods Using a split-mouth design, a total of 31 patients with grade Ⅱ mandibular molar furcation defects were treated with bone graft combined with GTR (the study group) on one side and open flap debridement (the control group) on the other side. Results Six months and one year after treatment, the gingival index, attachment level, pocket depth were significantly improved than those before treatment. And the improvements in the study group were significantly greater than those in the control group. Conclusion Bone graft/GTR combined technique is an more effective modality of regenerative treatment for mandibular grade Ⅱfurcation defects than flap surgery.
