Abstract

PUMA (p53 upregulated modulator of apoptosis) is a member of the Bcl-2 family and plays a powerful pro-apoptotic role. The studies showed that the decrease of PUMA expression was closely related to the occurrence of tumor and upregulation of PUMA expression could enhance tumor sensitivity to radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The deletion of PUMA could effectively reduce the damage of radiotherapy and chemotherapy to normal tissues. Here we review the research progress of PUMA as a therapeutic target in cancer treatment and cytoprotection.
