Abstract
123 patients with pathologically confirmed oesophagitis or oesophageal cancer were followed up for three years. The results showed that chronic esophagitis may be the basis of esophageal cancer. 13 of 109 oesophagitis patients have occurred carcinoma of esophagus (11.9%). Among them esophagomycosis showed highest rate of malignigation (17.3%), followed by chronic esophagitis, erosive esophagitis and reflux esophagitis. Oesop-hageal cancer is mainly associated with the increase of age rather than with activities of esophageal inflammation (P0.05). Patients with hyperplasia of esophageal mucosa had high cancer incidence (45%). Heavy degree of hyperplasia may be the precancerous changes. Smoking and alcohol drinking are the factors promoting hyperplasia. For the prevention of esophageal cancer one should treat the esophagitis and give up smoking and drinking.
