Study of the Effect of Music Therapy on the Life Quality of Schizophrenic Inpatients

Objective To explore the influence of music therapy on the life quality of schizophrenic inpatients.Methods A total of 68 schizophrenic inpatients were divided into two groups,i.e.,the music therapy group of 26 patients and the control group of 42 patients.Before conducting any treatment in the study,the life quality of all the patients in the two groups was evaluated with GQOLI-74.Then,the 26 patients in the music therapy group accepted the routine treatment with antipsychotic drugs plus the eight-week music therapy.The 42 patients in the control group only accepted the routine treatment with antipsychotic drugs.At the time point when the eight-week music therapy in the test group was over,the life quality of all the patients in the two groups was measured with GQOLI-74 again.(Results The) results showed that: after the eight-week treatment of music,the patients in the music therapy group had a significant increase(P0.05)on 16 of 20 factors(except factors 1 to 4),3 dimension scores(including body function,psychologic function,and social function),and the total score.Compared with that in the control group,the scores of 17 of 20 factors(except factor 1,factor 2 and factor 4) and 3 dimensions in the music therapy group were significantly higher than that in the control group(P0.01).Conclusions The Music therapy is useful for improving the quality of life of schizophrenic inpatients.
