Abstract

The present rocky desertification classification for the karst mountain areas of Southwest China is too simplified and it only indicates the ratios of rocky areas with no vegetation to the total area for a land but unable to reflect changes in ground material composition and vegetation due to rocky desertification occurring on the land.A new rocky desertification classification is proposed in this paper. It is an integrated classification of soil loss extents, rocky desertification extents and ground material compositions. The classification indicates not only the current landscape characteristics, but also changes since land desertification on karst slopes. Therefore,it is better to meet the demands for analyzing causes of rocky desertification, making control plans and selecting measures.
