Abstract

Objective To investigate the status of thyroid diseases in Xinhui area. Methods The thyroid function of total of 15 648 cases of regular check up individuals, outpatients and inpatients in 3 general hospitals in the last 3 years were tested. Individuals showing abnormal in the test were followed with clinical diagnosis to confirm the incidence of thyroid diseases and to study the correlation of the disease with sex and age. The trends of the thyroid diseases in the population were analyzed in three periods. Results Among all the thyroid diseases detected in the whole study, the incidence of hyperthyroidism was 12.9%, hypothyroidism was 3.6%, subclinical hyperthyroidism was 6.6%, subclinical hypothyroidism was 6.7%, and other thyroid diseases was 2.0%. The proportions of different types of thyroid diseases detected were: hyperthyroidism 40.6%, hypothyroidism 11.5%, subclinical hyperthyroidism 20.7%, subclinical hypothyroidism 21.1%, and other thyroid diseases 6.2%. The proportion between male and female is 1∶2.60 for incidence of thyroid diseases. The ratio incidence of hyperthyroidism in male to that in female was 1∶4.03. The prevalence of thyroid diseases was the highest in the age group of 20~49 years old. The total incidence of thyroid diseases was 31.7% and it was slightly increased from 2001 to 2004 (28.1% in 2001-11~2002-10, 32.9%in 2002-11~2003-10, 33.8% in 2003-11~2004-10) Conclusions The incidence of hyperthyroidism was higher than that of hypothyroidism. The incidence of subclinical hyperthyroidism and subclinical hypothyroidism was about the same. The incidences of other thyroid diseases were lower. There was a tendency of increase in the incidence of thyroid diseases in Xinhui area in the last three years.
