Abstract
Objective:to investigate the sputum-inductive effect of hypertonic aerosolized saline inhalation in patients with non-productive cough.Methods: Between February 2003 and August 2005,aerosolized hypertonic saline(5%) or normal saline(0.9%) was inhaled in 120 patients who were unsuccessful in routine sputum collection.Results: Efficacy of sputum induction was 95.5%(56/60) with hypertonic saline aerosol vs 30%(18/60) with normal saline aerosol.A significant difference was found between the two inhalations(P0.001).Conclusion: Aerosolized hypertonic saline inhalation appeared to remarkably increase the rate of successful sputum induction.
