Abstract

Objective: To investigate the expression of utrophin and dystrophin in muscles of the patients with childhood muscular dystrophy(MD).Methods: The expression of utrophin wes analyzed by immunofluorescence methods with the muscle biopsies from 8 patients with childhood MD and 2 normal controls. Results: Immunofluorescence reactivity for utrophin was weak and discontinuous in a minority sarcolemma of Duchenne muscular dystrophy(DMD) patients with severely reduced dystrophin.Utrophin was negative on sarcolemma of DMD patients with moderate decreased dystrophin and other non-DMD muscular dystrophies. There was no immunofluorescence reactivity for utrophin on sarcolemma of normal biopsies. Conclusion: The expression of utrophin in childhood MD was related to the decline of dystrophin expression, and may has relationship with the severity of clinical symptom.
