Abstract
The present study analyzed the influence of various irradiation conditions on the properties of silk fibers by irradiating them with 60Co-γ rays under different doses and circumstances and detecting concentrations of free radicals in the silk through electron spin resonance spectroscopy(ESR).The results indicated that free radicals of silk irradiated by 60Co-γ rays were increased with dose increment from 0 to 250 kGy.However, high doses of irradiation led to degradation of the silk thus affecting its normal properties.Hence, the irradiation dose needed to be below 50 kGy.Compared to free radicals generated under irradiation in air, those generated from irradiation in vacuum were higher, and the free radicals were mainly from amino acids.Yet,when the irradiation dose was increased, the difference of free radical levels generated in both air and vacuum became slighter.
