Abstract
The effects of yttrium on the microstructure and mechanical properties of AZ61 magnesium alloy were studied in this paper. The experimental results showed that the crystal grains of the alloy could be refined with the addition of the Y,the netted distribution of the β-Mg17Al12 phase began to break up and formed the new granular phase Al2Y in and between the crystal grain. The Y with few content improved the alloy's mechanical properties at room temperature. The alloy had the best mechanical properties when the content of the Y is 1%,however,excessive Y made the alloy's microstructure course organization thick, and decreased the mechanical properties of the alloy.
